  REVIEW:

We didn’t spend most our lives livin’ in a gangsta’s paradise, but it was starting to feel that way by the end of Waist Deep.

Tyrese Gibson is an ex-con who is out of prison and now trying to do the right thing.  After picking his son up from school one day, his car is hijacked with his son still in it.  When the bad guys figure out who the kid is, they keep him and demand a $100,000 ransom.  Unfortunately, the guy who ordered the hijack is Tyrese’s old partner-in-crime and is convinced that Tyrese made off with the loot from their last heist and has it stashed somewhere.  Tyrese is frantic to get his son back and forces a beautiful associate of the bad guy (Meagan Good) to help him.  His race against time takes the audience into the gritty and ruthless world of gangs, crime and retaliation.  He’s desperate to get the ransom money because he has no doubt his son will be killed if he doesn’t.  In Bonnie and Clyde style, Tyrese and Meagan carry out a plan to rob the bad guy’s safety deposit boxes to raise the money.  When the exchange of money for son goes down, everything goes wrong.  To save his son, Tyrese has to leave him and his new love behind and put himself in the line of fire.

As far as hardcore gangsta joints go, Waist Deep is da izzle, izzle, double jizzle . . . izzle . . . ya know what I’m sayin?’  No idea, huh?  Well, considering its depressing setting and strong violence, it’s not too bad.  The story, though often predictable and unrealistic, is interesting and enthralling.  The movie has a good pace and is very powerful visually.  But, the ending is a little too drawn out, and the final showdown between rivals Tyrese and bad guy “Big Meat” is less dramatic and satisfying than it could have been.  The acting was mostly good, but a tiny bit over-the-top in some places.  Nonetheless, if you like ‘em rough, Waist Deep may be “da bomb to yous.”

  MOVIE NIGHT TRAFFIC LIGHT:

On the Movie Night Traffic Light on a scale of GREEN meaning “Go – it’s a must see”, YELLOW meaning “Caution – it’s okay” and RED meaning “No - stop don’t do it."

We rate Waist Deep YELLOW.  Caution – this isn’t the best movie, but well done for what it is!
